Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the predictive role of attachment representations (positive mother, positive father, positive self, negative mother, negative father and negative self) on irrational beliefs in romantic relationships among university students. The study group consists of volunteer students who were attending Education Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Nursing at Akdeniz University. The study group consisted of 497 students, of which 340 were female and 157 were male. The ages of the students are between 18–29 years. In the study, the Attachment-Based Mental Representation Scale, The Irrational Beliefs in Romantic Relationships Scale and Personal Information Form were used to collect the data. In the data analysis, multiple regression analyses were carried out for each subscale of the Irrational Beliefs in Romantic Relationships Scale. As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was found that positive self and negative self scores significantly predicted excessive expectations and mind reading scores in romantic relationships. According to the results, it was determined that positive self and negative mother scores significantly predicted social time use scores. On the other hand, negative mother and negative self scores significantly predicted gender differences in romantic relationships. Results also suggested that positive mother, positive self and negative mother scores significantly predicted different thinking scores in romantic relationships. Finally, none of the attachment representation subscales significantly predicted physical proximity scores alone.
